When was the first milled coin minted? [solved] – Numista

I know the first English milled coins were minted in 1561. I believe the French were the first to mint milled coins but I cant find an exact date. Does anyone know?

I’m not an expert in any kind of coins, but I reckon I’m good at research and will do my best to help. Feel free to tell me my identifications/valuations/gradings are wrong. It’s the only way I’ll learn.

I’m assuming this is the first milled coin ever minted. It’s extraordinary that it would take another 100 years for milled coinage to replace hammered (in the British isles at least).

Taking a break from swapping for a while, but still interested in pre 1799 Spanish coins, I will make time for that! Looking for pre 1783 coins

If this truly is the first milled coin then can we please add the edge detail to it? But we need to make sure it is the milled edge.Interesting question and read, thanks!

I don’t think there will be much detail on the edge, I have an Elizabeth I milled sixpence from 1562 and it’s almost paper thin.

Yes, the photo is not necessary, just the description, under: edge details?
