Hawaiian Coins

Prior to becoming an American state in 1959, Hawaii was a Kingdom in the 1800s and a U.S. Territory from 1898 until 1959. In 1883, the Kingdom of Hawaii issued a variety of coins, to be used as currency on the islands. They issued One Cent, Five Cents, Ten Cents, Quarter Dollar, Half Dollar and One Dollar coins. Some are very rare while many others were minted in sufficient quantities to be collectible and still currently affordable. Interestingly, the Silver Dime, Quarter, Half Dollar and Dollar coins were designed by Charles Barber, Chief Engraver at the U.S. Mint and all of these coins were struck at the San Francisco Mint.
